LITERARY
A FIVE-MINUTE BREAK
Words: Ma. Lonila V. Agaton
I'm lying on the bed inside my dark room, trying to clear my mind.

I put my right hand on the left side of my chest to soothe my heart.

I’m not palpitating, but suddenly I’m having a hard time breathing.

My headache is getting worse as I’m whimpering in silence.

Tears starts rolling down nonstop on both sides of my eyes.

I feel so helpless as the memories of my dark past are now vivid.

A minute had passed…

I feel something sharp like a knife is piercing through me.

Every inch of my body is in pain, but I can’t even move.

I don’t know where it hurts or where it’s coming from.

Why is this happening to me?

What’s wrong?

It’s like I’m having a nightmare, but I know that I’m wide-awake.

Another two minutes have gone by…

As I stared blankly at the ceiling, the crystal water from my eyes had already stopped.

My pillow is wet and my cheeks now are dry.

How long has it been?

How long this should be going?

Should I wait a little longer?

I scanned my surroundings and realized that it’s really dark in here.

Then three minutes passed…

An abrupt deafening sound of my alarm went off.

I sat down and turned it off.

I picked up my eye glasses beside me and wear it while I stood up.

I walked to the door to switch the light on.
